EFFECT OF COLONIAL RULE ON CULTURE OF BANGLADESH

EFFECT OF COLONIAL RULE  ON CULTURE OF  BANGLADESH

Culture refers to the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society. around two hundred years Bangladesh was a colony of Great Britain. so what was their influence on our culture ? to be honest it was surprisingly huge. here's some example of a culture which was not present in our last thousand years but we adopted in the colonial period-

1.what we wear is a part of our culture. here almost all the educated class of people wear shirts, pants. high officials wear suits in this humid weather which looks very funny, most of the men are clean shaved and some wear a tie. women nowadays adopting European clothing style but it's not too prominent.

2. In eating habits we are eating slices of bread, jam/jelly, omelets in breakfast.it is most prominent in the educated class.

3. In education English is still a major medium of higher education. there are thousands of English medium schools in primary and secondary levels. middle and upper class still a huge fan of English as a medium of education. speaking in good English still regarded as a great qualification. higher court proceedings still in English. a lot of signboards, business cards, invitation cards, street signs are in English.

4.in politics people learned -divide and rule policy from English very well. politicians are using the policy in every sphere of society.

5.cricket is the most popular sport in Bangladesh which originated in England. also, there is a huge effect of English music on our traditional music. both the visual and performing art of Bangladesh are greatly influenced by western philosophy.

6.tea is the most popular drink in Bangladesh which was brought by English.

7.Madness for fair complexion especially among women may be due to long colonial rule.

8.the idea to prioritize materialistic gain(eg. money, good house, job, etc)over spiritual gain was brought by the English. huge population and internal competition for material gain among them, making people more corrupted day by day.
